A simple explanation of the EC 261 rules (Europe/UK), when you are entitled to €250–600, how to apply and what documents are required.
Your flight arrived more than three hours late and youre wondering if you can get some money back from the airline. In many cases the answer is yes, especially when flying within Europe or on European airlines.
The main rule is called EC 261. It protects passengers when a flight is delayed and you reach your final destination more than three hours late. The compensation can be 250, 400 or 600 euros depending on the distance of your flight. Short flights up to 1500 km usually get 250 euros, medium ones between 1500 and 3500 km get 400 euros, and long flights over 3500 km can qualify for 600 euros.
However, you only get this compensation if the delay was the airlines fault. Bad weather, security problems or air traffic control strikes usually dont count. But if its because of technical issues, crew problems or airline scheduling, then you probably qualify.
To make a successful claim you need a few important documents. Keep your boarding pass, the confirmation of the actual arrival time, and any messages or emails from the airline about the delay. Its also helpful to take a photo of the departure board showing the delayed flight.
The easiest way is to submit the claim directly through the airlines website. Look for the section called passenger rights or compensation claim. Fill in the form carefully and attach all your documents. Some airlines reply quickly, others can take weeks or even months.
If the airline refuses your claim or ignores it, dont give up. You can use official complaint channels in the country where the flight departed or arrived. Many people also get help from specialized services, but its always better to try the airline first.
Remember that you usually have between two and six years to file the claim, depending on the country. So even if you forgot about it right after the trip, you might still be able to apply later.
The key is to act with clear evidence and patience. Many passengers successfully receive compensation when they follow the process properly and keep good records.
